CyberBuild delivers Digital Engineering solutions for the AEC/FM sector.


CyberBuild is a research laboratory associated to the Royal Academy of Engineering Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Design at Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh, UK). In collaboration with various academic and industry partners, we research and develop technologies that deliver more efficient and effective design, construction and management of built environment assets. We work in the areas of:

[08-03-2017] iVR project UK Recognition

The iVR Project, a collaboration bentween CyberBuild (through the ICE team), Skills Development Scotland (SDS), CITB and Animmersion Ltd. has won the UK Career Development Award for Best Practice in the Use of Technology in Career Development. And, this success as been the subject of a Motion to the Scottish Parliament (Motion S5M-04797; see here).

[30-11-2016] TurbineHR II

The ICE team, in collaboration with Animmersion Ltd., is to extend its TurbineHR project supported by ESP, ORE Catapult and Fife College. In this new project, training will move from the top of turbine to inside them.

[04-06-2016] ICE showcases at home! At the Heriot-Watt University Garden Party.

Today, we had the chance to show the iHR to numerous children and their parents who work at Heriot-Watt University. We have received plenty of visits of curious people who sometimes had heard of us but had never seen the system.

[02-06-2016] ICE supporting the Glasgow Science Centre Bing Bang day!

We have been stormed by successive waves (classes) of children who then sadly had to orderly queue for trying the iHR system. Thanks ESP for inviting us!

[06-05-2016] For a change, it is adults who tried our iHR at Botanic Lates!

Conversations were different from those in our usual engagement events, and it was nice to answer questions about the end purpose of the system, the type of reseach done in our department at Heriot-Watt, etc.

[01-04-2016] New project for the ICE team in collaboration with Animmersion Ltd.

The ICE team, in collaboration with Animmersion Ltd is going to develop an immersive VR app to engage young people about energy efficiency in housing and corresponding careers in the AEC sector. The project is co-funded by CITB and SDS.

[29-02-2016] School pupils get hi-tech tour of construction sector

The ICE was invited to demo the iHR system at a seminar organised by the Scottish Construction Group that aimed to "offer pupils a glimpse of the future of the sector using the latest technology". The event was attended by 85 pupils from Glasgow secondary schools.

[29-02-2016] ICE showcases at ORE Catapult inauguration event

The ICE was invited to demo the iHR system at the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult inaugration of its recently acquired 7MW offshore wind demonstration turbine at Levenmouth. Among the attendees and testers of the iHR system was Fergus Ewing, MSP and Scottish Government's Minister for Business, Energy and Tourism.

Fred represented the CyberBuild Lab at the Hack_Construct challenge this weekend organised by InnovateUK, Construction Scotland Innovation Centre (CISC), BIM2050 and the Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN). The GeniLoci team he was part of even won the first prize!

Fred was invited to a CIOB CPD event to present his outlook on Building Information Modelling (BIM). The title of the presentation was "To BIM or not to BIM".

The ICE team was invited to demo its iHR system to staff of the Glasgow Science Centre with a view on a possible permanent setup there.

[29-01-2016] ICE Receives two CIOB International Innovation & Research (I&R) Awards!

The CyberBuild's ICE project has just received not one but two International Innovation & Research (I&R) Awards from the Chartered Institute Of Builders (CIOB). The iHR system received the Highly Commended Award in the Innovation in Education & Training Award category, and the AT-BAN received the Premiere Award in the Digital Innovation Award category.

[07-10-2015] iHR to be piloted at Fife College

With the ICE team, we have secured a new project for piloting the iHR System for wind-turbine safety and maintenance training. In collaboration with Annimmersion Ltd., we will deploy a verison of our system on the campus of Fife College with a 'training game' enabling trainees to conduct inspection in realisitc (yet safe) conditions.

[01-09-2015] UrbanPlanAR joins the BIM SuperKTP

UrbanPlanAR has been asked to join the BIM SuperKTP initiative. We hope to demonstrate our system using their project design (developed with a process aimed at being fully compliant with BIM Level-2 requirements)

[06-08-2015] BIM2050 looks at ICE technologies for the future!

We have the great pleasure of showcasing our technologies (iHR and AT-BAN systems) to the CIC BIM2050 Group. These inspired construction practitioners seemed quite enthusiastic about our technologies and asked really good questions.

[09-07-2015] Scottish Water to trial the AT-BAN

Scottish Water has approached us to better understand our AT-BAN system and trial it. We very much look forward to work with and help them sustain the health of their employees.
