The Controlled Activities Regulations (CAR) come into force in April 2006 and will require multi-disciplinary consideration of ecology, environmental quality, geomorphology and engineering to understand the health of a river. The SHSG 2006 seminar will interest and inform both the engineer who now needs to understand the ecological drivers of CAR, and the environmental scientist who now has to account for many more aspects of the health of a river when considering environmental change.

2006 Seminar -
A New Challenge for Water Engineers - The Controlled Activities Regulations (2005)

From 1 April 2006, most engineering activities in rivers and other water bodies will be controlled. This includes abstractions from surface and groundwater, impoundments of rivers, lochs, wetlands and transitional waters, groundwater recharge and other engineering work in rivers, lochs and wetlands. For minor, low-risk operations the requirements are relatively light but for more serious operations a licence may be required with a named person being responsible for ensuring the terms of the licence are complied with. This seminar will outline the requirements of the new legislation and describe the duties and responsibilities of the engineers involved.
