Poul Harremoës Award

The Poul Harremoës Award for Best Urban Drainage Paper by a Young Author

This award is given for the presentation of novel and ideally, provocative, ideas relating to developments in urban drainage. Vision and innovation were the hallmarks of Prof. Poul Harremoës' (1934 - 2003) career and his contributions to advancing knowledge in environmental sciences and engineering related to urban drainage are unsurpassed. In recognition of his outstanding and unique contributions, the Joint Committee on Urban Drainage, in cooperation with the International Water Association, has established a triennial competition for the best paper written by a young author to be held in conjunction with the Committee's triennial conferences on urban drainage. The first award in this series was made at the 10th International Conference on Urban Drainage (ICUD) held in Copenhagen in 2005. More than 100 papers participated in the competition, and the Award was won by Christoph Ort from EAWAG, Switzerland.

The main eligibility criteria are:

  • Only authors who are no older that 35 years of age on the first day of the conference are eligible.
  • Authors must specify that his/her paper is a candidate paper when submitting the abstract.
  • Only single author papers will be considered for this auspicious prize. Authors may wish to note any help received from others in the "Acknowledgements" section of the paper.
  • The work should not have been presented previously.

The prize will be awarded as follows:

  • Three candidates will be selected prior to the conference.
  • Each of the three candidates is entitled to free registration for the conference.
  • The candidates compete by presenting and defending their papers at a special session of the conference.
  • The best combined paper and presentation from among candidates will win the award.
  • Papers are judged based on:
    • their innovation, originality and promotion/development of new concepts in urban drainage; and
    • the candidate's ability to present the ideas in an entertaining and convincing way in both the written paper and the oral delivery at the conference.
  • The award includes a trophy as well as a free, all expenses paid, invitation to attend the next ICUD.
  • The winner will be announced at the conference.

The 11th ICUD Harremoës Award nominees are:

A dynamic-objective-function algorithm to calibrate a 1D/1D coupled hydraulic model versus a 1D/2D model, Jorge Leandro, Exeter University, UK.

Use of floating macrophyte mats for treatment of CSOs, Annelies Van de Moortel, Ghent University, Belgium.

Metals pollution tracing in the sewerage network using the diffusive gradients in thin-films technique, Philip Thomas, Thames Water, UK.
