The School of the Built Environment recently hosted the High Speed Track Railways Day at the Institution of Civil Engineers in Westminster, London.
The event that was organised by Professor Peter Woodward and his research team saw an exciting mix of presentations, discussions and networking.
Speakers included Heriot-Watt’s own Professor Paul Jowitt (2009-2010 President of the Institution of Civil Engineers) as well as Professor Andrew McNaughton, Chief Engineer of High Speed Two Ltd.
The event stressed the need to develop fast transportation routes to compete with airway travel and discussions evolved around which technological innovations will be required to deliver high speed tracks in the UK. Research at Heriot-Watt will continue with the aim of achieving a virtually maintenance free railway track.
The day was supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council under the Pathways to Impact initiative.
The academics involved in this event are part of the High Speed Rail Research Group arising from the Joint Research Initiative (JRI) collaboration in Civil Engineering. The main aim of this unique facility is to provide industry with relevant research about high speed rail development. The current Government have prioritised the development of a high speed rail network across the UK and so the funding and cutting edge facilities that are available at the University will help to shape and inform future policy and development of an upgraded track across the UK.
